Behind this is usually a plausible assumption: a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is not yet ready for productive use. „Not finished“ is equated with risk.

This assessment falls short. Because „unfinished“ is not a flaw with an MVP – it's a conscious design decision.

What „fertig“ actually means
A finished product delivers clearly defined processes, complete functions, and a stable system environment. This creates reliability – and at the same time, a commitment. Structures are established, requirements are standardised, and changes become more expensive and slower. A finished product efficiently meets existing requirements. Incorporating new requirements is not its primary purpose.

What an MVP actually is
An MVP is the smallest possible functional version of a product, with which a concrete hypothesis can be validated in the market. The goal is not to deliver something unfinished. The goal is to learn early on: Which requirements are actually relevant? Which assumptions hold true? Which ones need to be corrected in real-world use?

In a market where programmatic audio, new data foundations, and AI-powered delivery are rapidly changing, this learning speed is not a sideshow. It is the actual lever.

Theory and practice diverge
Within development teams, new solutions often seem cohesive: processes are well-thought-out, usage scenarios clearly defined. In day-to-day use, a different picture often emerges. Users utilise functions differently than expected, shorten processes, and formulate new requirements.

This is not an indicator of flawed development. It is the core of the learning process – and precisely the information that cannot readily be incorporated into a finished product anymore.

A market in motion
The audio and ad tech industry is undergoing a period of unusually high change: new data sources, programmatic delivery, generative and predictive AI, shifting usage habits. Many market participants – including those on the supplier side – lack reliable experience. We are all in a learning phase.

In such an environment, classic, linear development cycles lose their effectiveness. Those who develop for two years before testing will inevitably build in the wrong direction for the market. Iterative models – develop, deploy, evaluate, refine – are not a method under these conditions, but a prerequisite.

What a late start actually costs
Those who wait until a solution is „finished“ gain stability – and forgo influence. Early usage phases are the period when data models, interfaces, and functional logic are open and can be aligned with concrete requirements. Those involved at this stage help shape what later becomes the standard. Those who join later adopt what others have shaped.

In audio advertising, where data models and targeting logics are particularly consequential, this difference is rarely neutral.

Conclusion
An MVP is not an unfinished product. It is a deliberate development mode with the goal of learning quickly and aligning solutions closely with real-world requirements. In a market that is currently restructuring, this is not a compromise – it is the approach that yields the most resilient products.

„Then I'd rather wait“ is therefore an understandable but risky position. Those who shape events gain more than those who wait.

By the way, do you already know amily.leadtrail?
One of the products we're currently working on, precisely in this mode – iterative, usable early on, and further developed together with customers.
